SANDS ACCESS & BIODIVERSITY
Sands is a well-used open space with an expanse of flat land, parking and great river frontage. Based on feedback from community consultation and support from Kirklees Council we are working to make the River Holme at Sands more accessible and better for wildlife.
Funded by Cobbett Environmental, we are creating a brand new section of wheelchair-friendly path, to connect the swimming pool with the children’s play area and car parking.
The white metal bridge is in need of repair. We hope to raise additional funds to replace the railings. We welcome any contribution from funders who would like to support this renovation.
New Notice Board
Through generous funding from players of the Postcode Lottery, we have bought a new notice board so that people can learn more about caring for the River Holme and users of Sands can post their events and ways to get involved in this popular riverside area.
What we have done already:
With the help of volunteers from Cummins Turbo Technologies, we have already cleared a section of overgrown path at Sands
Planted and cared for fruit trees in partnership with Holmfirth WI’s Fruit Revival group.
Himalayan balsam clearance
We are working with Kirklees Council and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to tackle Japanese knotweed
We hope this work will spark further improvements to the area, such as benches, habitat improvements and way marking.
